Tips For Improving your Child’s Reading Skills

Parents have a huge impact on how well their child reads or not. While every child is different in their ability and interest to read, these tips for improving your child’s reading skills will help any child. I hope that you’ll use these tips with your child and watch as you beam with pride as your child starts to read more frequently and better.

Schedule Reading Time

No matter how old your child is, you can schedule reading time in every day. Set aside a specific time each day to read aloud to your child when they’re younger. As your child gets older and is more capable of independent reading, use this time for them to read aloud to you. When the older days of teenager life appear, well still have this scheduled reading time where the whole family reads their own books.

Have Tons of Books

Purchase bookshelves to have in your home so that there will always be some books on hand for your children. This is a great way to encourage your child to read and improve their reading skills. A child who grows up with bookshelves full of books around the home are more apt to grab a book when they’re bored. Consider purchasing books at yard sales and discount book stores so you have many choices.

Pay Attention

As your child starts to read on a regular basis, you’ll notice improvements in their reading skills. As your child gains strength in new areas, try to offer books that will help them improve their reading skills in other areas. Be sure to praise your child when they’re reading on their own and during the scheduled reading time so that they’ll be more apt to continually grab a book and read during their downtime.

Use Many Aids

Consider using many aids such as paperback books, computer articles, Kindle books and other aids that will help guide your child to learn phonics and other skills necessary for age-level reading skills. Do some research to find out what aids may work best to invest you in for your home to improve your child’s reading skills. I personally feel investing in a Kindle or other e-book reader is a wonderful aid.

There are many ways you can improve your child’s reading skills, each of the tips I shared here today will help inspire a love of reading in your child. Once a child starts to enjoy reading on a regular basis, they’ll naturally develop the ever-important reading skills necessary for their age group.
