7 Benefits of Backyard Chickens

We moved into a new house in November and my next door neighbor has a flock of chickens. Let me tell you it was such a pleasant surprise when I saw them that first day. I actually look forward to the roosters wakeup call every morning. I’m usually up way before them anyway. 🙂

So, let’s start with the obvious….

Chickens lay eggs. … Big, beautiful, delicious eggs!

Chickens create excellent fertilizer. … Yes, it’s true they nest under the bushes and create excellent fertilizer.

Chickens make great pets. … My kids love them and the neighbor’s little boy loves them as well.

Chickens help control bugs and weeds naturally. … This is one of my favorite things about them. They actually walk around and eat the ants and worms in your yard. In Florida, this is a wonderful thing!!

Chickens are like a natural garbage disposal. … I don’t feed them scraps, but I know others that do.

Chickens are fairly easy to take care of. … Yes, buy them a predator proof chicken coop and give them water and food, and it’s as simple as that!

Finally, they are also a great option if you love fresh, home-grown meat….    While the practices are a bit different for meat chickens(broilers), it’s still a great option if you are wanting your food sourced straight from the farm.

No matter what option you choose, contact your local County or municipality and find out the regulations for backyard chickens.
