Achieving Mental Calm in Uncertain Times

The whole world is currently facing a massive period of uncertainty. None of us know what is going on, what to do for the best, how long it might last, and what we can expect from the coming weeks, months, and perhaps even years. Very quickly, many of our lives have changed beyond all recognition, and most of us are doing everything that we can to adjust rapidly to a new way of being.

Even those of us that are usually calm and have never experienced anxiety are struggling. We’re worried about our health and the health of the people that we love. You might also be concerned about food supplies, your finances and employment, and even being at home a lot more than you are used to can feel somewhat overwhelming. If you are currently feeling stressed, anxious, and worried, you certainly aren’t alone.

But, it’s exhausting and ultimately bad for both your physical and mental health. It’s crucial that you can find some calm. That you are able to relax your mind, ease tension, and unwind. This will help you to get by, and even find happiness in these trying times. Here are some tips to help you.

Enjoy a Calming Supplement

You’ve probably heard that chamomile tea can be soothing, well if we look at chamomile effects on brain, we see that it’s much more than an urban myth. Chamomile really can calm you down, reduce stress and anxiety, and help you to sleep. If you don’t like tea or need an extra boost, a supplement can be effective.

Exercise

Exercise has so many benefits. It can help you to burn off some negative energy and stress; it can ease tension in your muscles, reduce any anxiety that you may be feeling, boost your confidence, and help you to sleep. Try to get a little exercise every day, even if it’s just a short yoga video to beat stress.

Take a Long, Hot Bath

A relaxing soak in the bath can be beneficial. Fill it with gently scented bubbles, take a hot drink and a good book, and lose yourself for a little while, as the water eases your muscles.

Maintain a Routine

Routine is important. It keeps us focused and helps the time to pass. Having a routine, even if it isn’t your usual one, can help you to find calm. Even small things, like eating with your family once a day, can restore a little normality.

Do Things That Make You Smile

Finding a little time to do things that make you smile is a great way to restore that sense of balance and calm in your life. It might be reading, or exercise, you may love baking, or even dancing around your kitchen. Do one thing a day that makes you smile, no matter what it is.   Gardening is proven to reduce stress and boost mood, so for me it was an easy choice to grow some of my favorite indoor plants.  I have long loved African Violets, Bamboo Plants and Spider Plants, so I started with those.  I did quite well with those and then eventually started adding more variety.  It’s been a great way for me to reduce stress and they give me such joy.  Next up:  The kids and I will be growing some fruits and veggies.  We can’t wait!

Find a New Kind of Normal

Normal is long gone, for the time being, at least. So, don’t worry about it. Find ways to create new normal, with your adapted routines. Embrace it, and learn to love it.

Get Plenty of Sleep

It’s hard to sleep when you are worried. But, things like exercise, warm drinks, and baths can help. Try to get as much sleep as possible, and you’ll find it easier to adjust.
