How to be a Tourist in Your Own Town

Sometimes you may feel like getting out of the house but can’t afford to travel far. If you’re looking for a change in scenery but have limited funds then perhaps it’s time to take a day and be a tourist in your own town. Experiencing your town in a whole new way is a fun way to reduce stress, learn more about your local community and enjoy quality time away from home without breaking the bank.

So become a tourist in your own town with these tips and plan a staycation that you will not soon forget. Remember, Collect Memories Not Things…

Find a Welcome Center

Your first stop is to find a welcome center area in your town. Most towns and cities have a little welcome center or kiosk area full of events and brochures to help you experience local fun. Grab some brochures and go home to plan your tourist for a day in your own town.  For example, our area of West Volusia County, Florida has a welcome center located in the heart of Downtown DeLand.  I would venture to guess that most people have never been there, but it is a wealth of resources.

Create an Itinerary

Now that you have the brochures to figure out what’s available for fun in your town, it’s time to create an itinerary. Sit down and make a plan for your day complete with a place to eat for lunch and places to enjoy for a scenic view break or photo opportunity.

Phone a Friend or a Family Member

You can take this one step further and have your friend show you around your own town. Call up a friend and ask them to plan a surprise day showing you around like you’re a tourist in town. This may actually be more fun than if you created your own tourist for a day ideas.

Visit Tourists Spots

Instead of doing what you normally do in town, go to all of the tourists’ spots and take cheesy photos of yourself in front of all the popular tourist spots. Be sure to track your tourist as a day in your own town on social media to look back on these memories later on and to inspire friends to do this.

No matter where you live, a small community or a large city, there are always things you can do around town that you’ve never done before. This is the perfect way to experience your town through the lens of a tourist and really get away from the stress that consumes us in our adult life for some fun on the town.
