Hearing is one of those things that a lot of people don’t really spend much time thinking about until it is basically too late. If you want to avoid that fate, however, then you are going to want to make sure you are paying attention to your hearing, and that you are doing all you can to take better care of it from day to day. In this post, we will take a look at some of the things you can do to better care for your hearing, thus ensuring that you have fewer problems with it in the long run.
Get It Checked
A lot of people fail to appreciate the importance of regular hearing tests, but you should ideally consider this as essential as getting your eyesight checked every year. If you are serious about looking after your hearing, you need to make sure that you are going to an audiologist every other year at least to have it checked out. You might notice changes to your hearing in the meantime too, which you should take as a sign to go for another check-up, just to be safe and sure that nothing is going wrong.
Use Whatever Is Prescribed To You
If your audiologist decides that you probably need some help with your hearing, it’s important that you defer to their expertise. A lot of people will fail to get the necessary treatment, either because they are embarrassed or they are concerned about cost. But the longer you go without the treatment you need, the worse your hearing is going to get. You might need to buy hearing aids, but the good news is that they are more affordable – and more effective – than ever, so this shouldn’t be as much of a concern as you might think.
Avoid Putting Anything In Your Ear
A lot of people still think that it is okay to put things inside your ears, but you should really avoid doing this at all costs. There is never a good reason to stick anything down there, and you are only ever going to make it worse. You don’t need to clean your ears of wax – the ear itself is already a self-cleaning machine, and the wax is the product of that process. If you feel you have an excess of wax, you can gently apply some olive oil rubbed onto some tissue around the outside of the ear – but never put anything into the canal.
Turn The Volume Down
If you tend to have your music turned up high, a simple thing you can do to protect your hearing is obviously to turn the volume down from time to time. This is especially important when you are listening to music in headphones, as this is known to be particularly damaging for your hearing in the long run. Try to keep it at 60% of the volume, and not listen through headphones for more than 60 minutes a day. This rule will ensure you are taking much better care of your hearing.
